avoid distortion of avatars?

Hi Friends,
I decided to change my avatar (what the heck -- new year, new look
) and I'm using my graphic one that I made. And I've noticed this with the other avatar, and everyone's avatars too.
On some pages, it seems the avatar image gets distorted -- usually squeezed width-wise thinner. Is there any way to avoid this? Or is it just the way the forum mod has coded for the image? I know enough about html, to know there is a way to build a page so that the image doesn't get resized across different systems, screen sizes, resolutions, etc.
So I suspect it's just the way the mod is coded. But I thought I'd ask anyway. Is there any way to avoid that distortion from our side?
I've used a version of my avatar that's just under the maximum width (100 x 100). So I wonder if I used a smaller one, whether it might not need to be squeezed?? It's really such a simple design, that it looks good even at 50 x 50.
Thanks

Yeah, the kitten one was a bit different than my usual style, but there was something so cute about it. If I could think of some single image to symbolize myself, I'd try to draw it. But I can't settle on one. A lot of forums have a large selection, and sometimes they include this single green leaf, which I've used. I guess I could draw a leaf. But holding a Bachelor's in Forestry, I can't decide which type of leaf to draw, lol! Or flower, or plant. I should probably try harder
